11/07/ 2010 Sucrogen Townsville 400 a roaring success

The Sucrogen Townsville 400 has cemented its place as one of the favourites of the V8 Supercar Championship Series after three days of spectacular sport and entertainment unfolded on the streets of Townsville.

The world-class event, from July 9-11, attracted a crowd of more than 152,000 people in what is the biggest and best annual event in northern Queensland.

Praise for the event flowed from politicians, drivers and teams, emergency services, local businesses and event promoters V8 Supercars.

V8 Supercars Australia CEO Martin Whitaker said: “What an incredible weekend - this is truly one of our very best signature events. V8 Supercars love coming to Townsville and it’s fair to say that Townsville loves V8 Supercars being here.

“When you consider we had huge crowds on all days that’s a very real demonstration of a community that really gets behind and supports this event.

“The Sucrogen Townsville 400 won the award for the best event in the Championship last year and judging on this weekend they will be hard to beat again.”

Corporate facilities were a sell-out and this year more grandstand seating was built to cater for the demand.

The Saturday night after-race concert was a huge hit, with more than 15,000 people staying to enjoy international rock legends INXS belting out their best hits.

At the event precinct, merchandise alley was popular with the local crowd, as was the L&H Family Zone, the Showtime FMX Freestyle Motocross, the V8 Supercar driver autograph sessions and the XXXX Gold Retreat.

Townsville was full-house with V8 Supercar fans who travelled from throughout the region, Australia and internationally for their annual fix of the ‘Greatest Show on Wheels’.

The community again embraced the event and has been in the grip of V8 Supercar fever for the past week. On Wednesday thousands lined the streets to welcome the V8 Supercar Transporters to the city and on Thursday the drivers were officially welcomed at the Super Welcome to Townsville celebration.
