9/07/2010  Sucrogen Townsville 400 a massive hit on Day One

North Queenslanders have welcomed the ‘Greatest Show on Wheels’ back to Townsville in their thousands on the first day of the Sucrogen Townsville 400 today (Friday).

The Sucrogen Townsville 400, now in its second year, brings world-class rock and world-class racing to the streets of Townsville in what is the biggest annual event in the region.

Thousands of people piled through the gates throughout today to catch on-track action including the V8 Supercar practice sessions and enjoy the dozens of off-track activities.

Merchandise alley was a hit with the local crowd, as was the L&H Family Zone and XXXX Gold Retreat.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh was track-side to officially open the new Queensland Government pedestrian bridge, built to meet the demand following the popularity of last year’s event.

The Sucrogen Townsville 400 continues tomorrow with the first 200km V8 Supercar race and tomorrow night INXS will rock Townsville in a one-off concert inside the event precinct. The concert is included in a Saturday ticket to the event.

The international rock legends were also track-side today (Friday) to enjoy all the action of the Sucrogen Townsville 400.

Special guest JD Fortune and bass player Garry Gary Beers were taken for the ride of their lives in a hot lap around the street circuit with drivers Jason Bright and Karl Reindler.

Sucrogen Townsville 400 Event Manager Kim Faithfull said: “We are blown away by the support for the event and the buzz around the event precinct today was electric.

“The improvements we have made this year, including providing more shade and the new Queensland Government Pedestrian Bridge, have only added to the event experience.

“We are looking forward to a huge day here tomorrow with the first 200km V8 Supercar race and the INXS concert tomorrow night.”
