7/07/2010 North Queensland ready to race for the Sucrogen Townsville 400

V8 Supercar fever was in the sky, on the water and throughout the streets of Townsville today as the build-up to the Sucrogen Townsville 400 hit top gear.

Thousands of people lined the streets of the city to welcome the V8 Supercar Championship Series to North Queensland in the spectacular V8 Supercar Transporter Parade.

The multi-million dollar transporters – a signature icon of the sport – wound their way through the suburbs to Reid Park, where the main event will begin in two days’ time.

The Sucrogen Townsville 400 will be a massive celebration of world-class racing and world-class rock, with Australian rock legends INXS to headline the Saturday night concert.

Earlier today, V8 Supercar driver Todd Kelly, of Jack Daniels Racing, hit the skies in Townsville’s popular Red Baron Seaplane to get a bird’s eye view of preparations at the Reid Park circuit.

His brother and fellow Jack Daniels Racing driver Rick Kelly took to the sea in a V8 powered drag boat, soaking up the city’s famous Strand.

The Kelly brothers are no strangers to the sky and sea, with Todd holding a pilot’s licence and Rick a regular on the water in ski racing boats.

Meanwhile, V8 Supercar drivers Fabian Coulthard, of Bundy Red Racing, and Alex Davison, of Irwin Racing, checked out the local wildlife and spent time with kids from Camp Quality at the Billabong Sanctuary wildlife park.

Camp Quality is the official charity of the Sucrogen Townsville 400.

Tickets are now on sale for an additional grandstand section that has been built in pit straight to meet demand from North Queensland residents wanting to be part of the biggest annual event in the region.

V8 Supercars is also giving people who have purchased a three-day general admission ticket, the opportunity to upgrade to a grandstand seat for just $88.

Get your tickets at www.ticketek.com.au or by calling 132 849.

Kids 12 and under can get free entry to the event with a special V.I.K. (Very Important Kid) Pass. Simply cut out the coupon from the Townsville Bulletin which appears every day this week and take it to a Ticketek outlet (Townsville Civic Theatre, Riverway) and exchange it for a free ticket.

Sucrogen Townsville 400 Event Manager Kim Faithfull said: “The sense of excitement is building with the event now only two days away.

“Our preparations at the event precinct are well on-track, and tomorrow we will be putting the finishing touches in place before gates open at 7am on Friday.”

“I would urge anyone who has not yet purchased their ticket to get in now and take advantage of the pre-purchase price as well as avoiding the queues.”
