Three days of spectacular street racing and entertainment at the
Sydney Telstra 500 has attracted a massive crowd of more than 184,000 at the
Olympic Park Precinct.
Today Jamie Whincup of TeamVodafone was crowned the 2009 V8 Supercar champion in
front of thousands of fans who converged on pit lane for the podium
presentation. The first ever street race in Sydney formed a spectacular end to
the V8 Supercar season.
Highlights included all the thrills and spills of both the V8 Supercars and the
four support categories on the challenging new circuit, two incredible live
music concerts including Aussie legends Cold Chisel, plus myriad off-track
activities around the precinct such as appearances by Roary the Racing Car,
driver autograph sessions, freestyle motocross and the Fuso V8 Supercar Indoor
Padddock.
Local boy James Courtney, of Jim Beam Racing, celebrated victory today in the
second 250km race at Sydney and final race of the year.
The Sydney Telstra 500 today cemented its place as one of the
country’s top sporting events with more than 72,000 people converging on
Sydney’s Olympic Park for the inaugural event.
The bumper crowd brought back the buzz to the Olympic precinct, which has not
seen crowds like this for years.
It was a day for both Ford and Holden fans to celebrate – Series leader all
year, Jamie Whincup of Team Vodafone, sealed the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship
with his fifth place in the 250km race and Garth Tander of Holden Toll Racing
Team finished first.
The roar of the V8 Supercars set a cracking atmosphere throughout the day, while
endless off-track activities provided hours of entertainment.
Roary the Racing car made its first appearances to a roaring reception from his
young followers in the Family Zone.
The Telstra Road to Tamworth was a huge hit on the Telstra Stage and the Fuso V8
Supercar Indoor Paddock amazed event goers.
Not to mention the Freestyle Motocross Spectacular, Dick Smith Sydney Cycle
Grand Prix, V8 Supercar driver Autograph Sessions and the XXXX Gold Retreat!
