Dunlop’s soft compound SP Sport Maxx ‘Sprint’ tyre will be available at Sandown
this weekend as part of the six-race arrangement with the V8 Supercars.
After three rounds, the quicker, faster-wearing ‘Sprint’ tyre has provided some
exciting racing and Dunlop’s Operations Manager, Kevin Fitzsimons, is expecting
another consistent performance at Sandown with the possibility of further lap
records to be set.
“At Sandown, I’m expecting most teams to fit the ‘Sprint’ tyre for Saturday’s
32-lap race and adhere to consistent lap times to complete the 100 kilometre
race on one set of tyres,” Kevin said.
“The road surface isn’t very coarse and the water seems to puddle rather than
drain away, so if it rains, the circuit can turn into a skating rink, especially
turn one.
“Knowing this, I’m sure teams will be watching the weather with great interest
as this could turn the tyre strategies on their head.”
Driver of the Ford Performance Racing Castrol Falcon, Steve Richards, will be
one that is keeping a close eye on the skies over the weekend to see when the
best time the ‘Sprint’ tyre will be fitted to his car.
"Sandown's all about horsepower, but the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx ‘Sprint’ tyre
should even that up a bit. They just give that bit more traction, which makes up
for any straight-line horsepower advantage; unless the other car has them on too
that is,” Richards said.
"Some of these betting sites are pretty game offering long odds on any V8 driver
this weekend; I honestly think anyone could win it, especially if it rains,” he
said.
