Sydney, Australia – July 14, 2009 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), makers of
Norton 360 security software, have presented Victoria’s Country Fire Authority (CFA)
with 500 tickets to the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge V8 Supercar race meeting in
Melbourne later this month.
Symantec’s consumer spokesperson Pacific, Matthew Drake was joined by Norton
Internet Safety Ambassador and four-time Bathurst winner, Craig Lowndes, to
present the tickets in recognition of the efforts of CFA firefighters and
volunteers during February’s tragic Victorian bushfires.
“The whole world was made aware of the CFA’s efforts in February and I hope
these 500 tickets to the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge go some small way to
showing Symantec’s gratitude for what they did,” said Mr Drake.
Lowndes, who grew up in Hurstbridge, near the fire-affected town of Kinglake,
presented the tickets to Springvale South Station Chief, Bernie Frawley, before
being inducted as an honorary CFA member.
The three-time V8 Supercar Series Champion took part in a number of drills with
the Springvale South station members to get a better idea of life as a
firefighter, including fire hose skill work and using the jaws-of-life on a car.
Lowndes paid tribute to the CFA’s efforts and announced they would be the
official Community Partner for the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge race weekend (31
July-2 August).
“Growing up in Hurstbridge I know only too well the great work the CFA does in
our community, whether it be putting out bushfires or attending to road
accidents,” Lowndes said.
“As a V8 Supercar driver, I know the importance of safe driving, so I encourage
everyone to take care on the roads during these winter months to make the CFA’s
job a little easier.
“I’m sure the 500 CFA members who attend the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge will
have a great time and I’ll be doing my best to put on a good show, with
hopefully a win or two.”
CFA area manager for Western Port, Peter Schmidt, echoed Lowndes’ comments by
issuing his own safety reminder.
“Winter is the CFA’s busiest period so we really can’t stress enough that people
take care and be vigilant with things like turning off electric blankets and
driving more controlled in adverse conditions,” Mr Schmidt said.
The Norton 360 Sandown Challenge – the seventh event within the 2009 V8 Supercar
Championship – gets underway on Friday, 31 July at Sandown Raceway in
Melbourne’s outer east.
